Put your bins out by 6am from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 August: Mid Sussex crews are starting an hour early during the amber heat alert.
Bin crews across Mid Sussex are starting their rounds an hour early for the rest of this week because of the heat. Mid Sussex District Council says waste collections will start earlier from Wednesday 12 August until Friday 14 August, and is asking households to have their bins out ready for collection by 6am instead of the usual 7am. The timing matches the national heat warning. The UK Health Security Agency has amber heat health alerts in place for every region of England, running from 9am on Tuesday 11 August until 9pm on Friday 14 August. (UK Health Security Agency)
In a normal week, collections in Mid Sussex take place between 7am and 3pm and the council asks for bins to be out before 7am on collection day, at the edge of the property, visible, and with the lid fully closed. (Mid Sussex District Council)
What it means for you
Have whatever is due out by 6am on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The council’s notice covers waste collections generally, so treat rubbish, recycling, food waste and garden waste the same: if it is due this week, it needs to be at the kerb by 6am. The night before is the safe option. You can check which bin is due on your street through the council’s bins and waste service area.
The early start ends on Friday 14 August. From your next collection after that, the usual before-7am rule applies again.
If your bin is missed, wait until after 3pm before reporting it. Crews can return at any point up to 3pm, so the council asks residents not to report a missed collection before then.
