Three towns, no capital
Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead are close in size and none of them speaks for the others, which is why the district goes by a compass direction rather than a town name. Between and around them are Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Lindfield, Cuckfield, Ardingly, Balcombe and Handcross. It is commuter country with the Brighton main line running down the middle of it, and housing growth is the argument that comes up most often.
Who decides what
Mid Sussex District Council: planning, bins, licensing, car parks. West Sussex County Council: roads, schools, social care. The South Downs National Park Authority determines planning applications within the park boundary in the south of the district. Three bodies, and the answer to “who do I complain to” depends on which one it is, so we name it in every story.
What we work from
The district council’s planning register and committee papers, the national park authority’s register where it applies, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Ouse and Adur headwaters, and company filings in The Gazette. Where a record is unclear we say so rather than filling the gap.
