We checked 13 Mid Sussex shops, from The Bookshop in East Grinstead to Pepperbox in Lindfield, for opening hours and what they sell. Updated November 2026.
Mid Sussex has 13 shops worth a Christmas shopping trip in 2026, and this guide puts them in one place with opening hours, addresses and what each one sells. The Bookshop and Tree Frog in East Grinstead, Pepperbox Interiors and South Downs Cellars in Lindfield, and the Bolney Wine Estate shop are the names most people know. We checked each entry on 5 November 2026 against the shop’s own site.
The shops are grouped by town, from East Grinstead in the north to Hurstpierpoint and Bolney in the south. Two National Trust shops, at Standen and Nymans, close the list.
East Grinstead
1. The Bookshop
The Bookshop calls itself “the quintessential English bookshop filled to the rafters with wonderful books, new and secondhand”. It sits in Tudor House on the High Street, with a timbered café inside and a panelled room upstairs for events and signings.
Its site lists signed copies and gift editions, a large railway section and maps, plus two gifts that are not a single book: a monthly Book Box through the letterbox and a Reading Spa, where staff pick new authors for the reader. The homepage also invites families to book Father Christmas.

Christmas shopping events
East Grinstead switches on its lights on Saturday 21 November, and every town car park is free from 10am that day; the town’s Christmas market is on 6 December. See our East Grinstead lights page. Burgess Hill switches on at 5pm on Thursday 26 November and then runs four days of chalets on Church Walk, set out on our Burgess Hill Christmas Festival page. Haywards Heath’s Christmas Festival runs from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday 28 November, with the lights on at 5pm at The Orchards.
Lindfield’s Christmas Festival Night, with late-night shopping on the High Street, is listed for Tuesday 8 December, with times still to be confirmed. That and the other fairs are on our Mid Sussex Christmas markets page.
Hours often change close to Christmas, so check before a special trip.

Our parking page has the town centre car parks, and our Christmas trains and buses page has the holiday timetables.
How we chose
We started from OpenStreetMap’s list of gift, book, jewellery, wine, art and toy shops in Mid Sussex, the Lindfield Life shop directory and the town councils’ own pages, then kept shops that sell things people give as presents and whose own site we could read on 5 November 2026. We saw no closure notices on those pages. We have not visited these shops, and the descriptions are theirs.
Several others are left out because we could not confirm them. Wakehurst’s shop is on a Kew page that would not load for us. Twelve Middle Row in East Grinstead has a website that says “Coming Soon”. Tufnells in Lindfield, Willis & Co in Cuckfield and Field and Forrest in Lindfield have web addresses that no longer lead to the shop. Charlotte Grace in Hurstpierpoint has no site of its own that we could find. We are not saying any of them has closed.
